Stable android Oreo + Latest 4.9 Kernel?

I did a android build of off latest source and I flashed the build and it is running fine.
For user space I used latest on master. And for kernel, I used latest in android-hikey-linaro-4.9 branch.
I see that latest android build is Version ‘P’.

If I want to go back to a more stable android-O build and let’s say I pick a tag for android-O and build it, will that older build be compatible with latest android-hikey-linaro-4.9 kernel?

If so, which is a good tag to use for most recent android-O build that can be used with latest 4.9 kernel?
